Background of the study

Online dating platforms have revolutionized the way individuals connect, court, and form romantic relationships. In Lagos State, these digital platforms have become a popular avenue for meeting potential partners, transcending traditional social and geographic boundaries. The rapid growth of mobile technology and the proliferation of social media have facilitated the emergence of numerous dating applications that cater to diverse demographics. These platforms offer users the convenience of exploring potential matches based on interests, lifestyles, and personality traits, thereby influencing modern relationship dynamics. However, the digital medium also introduces challenges such as misrepresentation, superficial connections, and issues related to privacy and trust. Moreover, online dating has altered courtship rituals and expectations, with users often prioritizing immediacy over deeper relational qualities. This study investigates how online dating platforms affect relationship formation, communication patterns, and long-term commitment among users in Lagos State. It considers both the empowering aspects—such as increased accessibility and choice—and the potential pitfalls, including the risk of commodifying personal relationships. Through a mixed-methods approach, the study aims to understand the social implications of digital courtship and its influence on contemporary relationship dynamics (Ibrahim, 2023; Adebola, 2024).

Statement of the problem

Despite the popularity of online dating platforms in Lagos State, there is limited understanding of their long-term impact on relationship quality and stability. Many users experience issues such as misrepresentation and transient interactions, which can lead to disappointment and mistrust. Furthermore, the ease of swiping and the abundance of options may encourage superficial decision-making rather than fostering meaningful connections. These challenges raise concerns about the overall social and emotional effects on individuals engaging in online dating. The study seeks to address these gaps by critically examining the influence of digital platforms on modern relationship dynamics and by identifying key factors that contribute to relationship success or failure in the digital age (Ibrahim, 2023).

To assess how online dating platforms shape relationship formation and dynamics in Lagos State.

To identify challenges and benefits experienced by users of these platforms.
